"Homegrown beans are far healthier than Chinese-made beans"
A survey has found that the beans produced in Andong demonstrate far superior quality than those farmed in China, in that the former flaunts excellent anti-oxidative action and higher content of functional ingredients.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Government Public Institute of Health & Environment recently compared the beans produced in Andong and those China-produced beans that are imported from China and are available for sale to South Korean consumers. Its analysis showed that Andong beans contained more of the major functional ingredients such as isoflavones, polyphenols, saponins, and tocopherols that the Chinese beans did.

Especially, as for anthocyanin in the husks of black beans that boast anti-oxidative action, green kernel black beans from Andong included 860㎎% (the content of functional ingredients in 100g of beans), four times the content of 211㎎% carried in the Chinese-made beans. The content of isoflavones which are effective in preventing prostate cancer and breast cancer was 1.2 or 1.3 times higher in either yellow or black beans from Andong than in those from China. And as for the content of saponins which are effective in preventing colon cancer, yellow beans and black beans surpassed the China-produced beans by 1.2 times and 1.4 times, respectively.

As for tocopherol (vitamin E) which fights oxidation, Daewon bean, as a variety of yellow bean from Andong carried 74.1㎎%, and Taegwang bean, the other variety, included 65㎎%, both far greater than 59.9㎎% included in the China-produced beans.
Park Seung-woo, the Leader of Food Functionality Research Team of Gyeongsangbuk-do Government Public Institute of Health & Environment, said, "Besides, we can cite the effects of bean ethanol extract that inhibits cancel cell growth as well. Research shows that Andong's beans register great anti-cancer action than China-produced beans for the cell lines of breast cancer and colon cancer. Overall, Andong's beans are believed to be of far greater value as a functional food."
